Washington, D.C. (AHN) – The United States will pledge $350 million over five years to bring “clean technology” to developing nations. The announcement comes from Energy Secretary Steven Chu, who is attending the global climate conference in Copenhagen.
The Renewables and Efficiency Deployment Initiative (Climate REDI), backed by the Obama administration, “will accelerate deployment of renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies in developing countries – reducing greenhouse gas emissions, fighting energy poverty and improving public health for the most vulnerable, particularly women and children,” according to the Department of Energy.
The project will focus on three major areas of development. The first will tackle solar and LED energy. The second front will push efficient equipment and appliances
, in an effort to bring down the demand for energy in rural and underdeveloped areas.
Third, the U.S. will develop an online information exchange and support the plan with policies from Washington.
